Adjusting a Door Closer

Posted by Jim McCarthy on

How to adjust a door closer: In the last Blog entry, I talked about the Door closer backcheck feature, what it does, and how to adjust it. In this entry, we'll talk about how to adjust a Hydraulic door closer. Whether it's an LCN Door Closer, A PDQ door closer,or  a dorma door closer. they all have essentially the same adjustments. So How do we go about adjusting the door closer? well, most door closers have 3 adjustments, Latch, sweep, and backcheck. First, the sweep adjustment. the sweep adjustment controls the closing speed of the door. Remember, the sweep adjustment is  controlling the speed of the door's rate of closure for about 90 degrees until the latch phase takes over, the adjustment screw is usually labeled S or Sweep. turning counterclockwise increases the speed, while turning clockwise decreases the speed. next is the latch adjustment. the latch adjustment controls the speed for that last 5-10 Degrees of door closer speed just before the door latches. it should be labeled L or latch .Again, clockwise to decrease, counterclockwise to increase speed., and finally the backcheck. for a detailed description of backcheck, and how to adjust it,click here. The backcheck adjustment keeps the door from flying open in high winds
